Unless you have been stranded on a deserted island with Gilligan for the last decade, the chances are high that you have heard of the keto diet. People have been raving about it for years with many individuals becoming disciples of the diet.

The Basics of the Keto Diet
The keto diet is essentially a low carb and high fat diet. If you can stay with the keto lifestyle, it is excellent for weight loss as the body begins using fat for energy instead of carbohydrates since your carbs will become heavily depleted. This results with a good amount of fat being burned up inside your body.

Your body will enter a metabolic state called ketosis after you have been faithful to the keto diet for a period of a few days to a week. During ketosis, your body uses ketones for energy instead of glucose (carbs). Ketone bodies come from good fat intake and are actually a much more stable source of energy.
Glucose is derived from carbohydrates and will produce highs and lows for energy. You still might feel a bit sluggish though during the first week or two of ketosis. After that you can resume regular levels of exercise, but it could be a few weeks before you are able to do high intensity exercises for sustained periods of time.
Stick With It
Strictly sticking to the keto diet can be difficult. About 20 to 35 percent of your calories should come from protein every day while you are living the keto lifestyle. Only five percent should come from carbs. That means that 65 to 75 percent of your daily calories should come from good fats.
However, be aware that some doctors and nutritional experts are concerned about the effect of such low carb/high fat intake over an extended period of time, and warn that a Keto diet should not be used for more than a few months at a time. One concern is that this approach, over time, can weaken muscles and since the heart is a muscle, cause the heart to weaken as well.
Get used to reading nutritional labels like it is your job. Sugar, cereal, pasta, bread, and grains can all be high in carbs, so the keto diet will require you to do some research on what foods you may have.
